Frequently Asked Questions

FAQS

General FAQS

+ HOW CAN A COUNSELOR HELP ME?

Once you give yourself, or loved one, the gift of seeing a counselor - you will start to notice positive changes. As your psychotherapist, we will help build you up to be the best version of yourself. We will help you create realistic goals and get you to actually reach those goals. You will feel confident and ready to take on anything that comes your way!

+ Can I speak to a counselor before booking an intake session?

Absolutely. We offer a free 15-minute free phone call consultation that you can have with a therapist before booking a first session with them. During this phone call, your potential therapist can tell you a bit more about themselves and the therapeutic modalities they use along with hearing more about what you are looking for in therapy to ensure that it is a good fit. If you are interested in this, please let our Intake Coordinators know when you contact us.

+ Can I speak to an intake coordinator on the phone before booking a session?

We conduct all of our intake coordination via email. Whatever questions or concerns you have, our Intake Coordinators will be happy to assist with through email. Feel free to contact us with your concerns.

+ Is therapy at a private practice right for me?

Your reason for seeking counseling is unique to you. Perhaps you are a local college student who is looking for effective stress management therapy. Maybe you are a family who is dealing with the loss of loved one, resulting in grief. The decision to pursue therapy depends on your preferences, needs, and priorities. Remember, there is no “right” or “wrong” reason to attend mental health counseling. By working with a therapist, you will receive the insight and techniques you need to feel like your best self again.

+ WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THERAPY TREATMENT?

We are all looking to feel better right away. Coming in for counseling can help you get on that track to feeling better. Each person has a different outcome they want to get from therapy. Since you have your own specific goal, we cannot tell you an exact amount of sessions it will take to reach. Additionally, each therapeutic method takes a different amount of time to be effective.

For example, in our professional experience, with a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach, we will typically spend about 3 months (or 12 sessions) to accomplish your goal. It is possible that after 3 months you will have more goals to accomplish and you will want to extend more sessions.

On the other hand, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy traditionally takes about 4 months (or 16 sessions) to help you overcome your fear. ERP counseling can be considered complete when you have successfully faced your high-level fears.

We don’t have any set rules in therapy and we are aware things come up in life that add new stress that you may want to address.

+ Do you provide monthly or biweekly sessions?

Typically, we recommend that new clients start with weekly sessions so they can build rapport with their therapist, but we understand that certain challenges may arise with a weekly commitment, from financial issues to scheduling concerns. We recommend weekly sessions so you have time to deeply discuss your goals and exactly how you want to tackle them with your counselor before switching to biweekly sessions. We do not offer monthly sessions to new clients as that would not be beneficial to the therapeutic process. At your first session with your counselor, you will discuss appointment frequency.

+ What can I expect during my intake session?

The intake session is the first session you will have with your therapist. In this first session, you and your therapist will spend time getting to know each other and your therapist will ask you a lot of questions, ranging from your upbringing as a child to your current concerns. At the end of your visit, you and your counselor will discuss the logistics of future appointments and you will have time to ask your counselor questions.

+ How long are therapy sessions?

The length of therapy sessions depends largely on the service you are seeking. For individual counseling, the first intake session is 60-minutes long and all ongoing sessions are 45-minutes long. For family counseling and couples therapy, all sessions are 60-minutes long, including the intake session.

+ How long will I be in therapy for?

Therapy duration varies based on individual needs and goals. Whether you're seeking short-term solutions or long-term healing, Anchor Therapy offers flexible treatment plans tailored to your pace and progress. Together with your therapist, you'll regularly reassess your goals and adjust your treatment plan accordingly. Therapy is a dynamic process that evolves with your growth and self-discovery journey.

Couples therapy FAQs

+ What kind of relationships do you work with?

Our couples counselors are trained to help couples of all backgrounds, including heterosexual, homosexual, monogamous, polyamorous, queer, gender non-conforming, and trans relationships. We also work with clients who are in mixed-raced relationships, blended families, second marriages, long-term relationships not defined by marriage, and more.

+ How long are couples counseling sessions?

All couples counseling sessions are 60-minutes long, including the first intake session.

+ How often would we need to see our therapist?

For couples therapy at Anchor Therapy, we recommend weekly or biweekly sessions to establish consistency and momentum in your therapeutic process. Regular sessions allow ample time to explore relationship dynamics, address recurring conflicts, and implement effective strategies for positive change.

+ What is Anchor Therapy’s approach to couples counseling?

Our couples therapists are trained in multiple therapeutic modalities and they tailor their approach to fit your needs. For example, we have couples counselors who are trained in the renowned Gottman Method, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) just to name a few.

+ How do your counselors approach therapy when one partner is more hesitant or resistant to couples therapy than the other?

It is not uncommon for one partner to be more hesitant or resistant to counseling, and our couples therapists understand that. If that is the case, our couples counselors prioritize creating a safe, non-judgmental space where each partner feels empowered to speak their truth. Both partners should and will feel heard and validated in couples therapy at Anchor Therapy.

Child/Teen Counseling FAQs

+ Can my child/teen attend the intake sessions with me?

For children under the age of 10 years old, we ask that one or both parents attend the first intake session without any children present. This way, the child counselor will be able to get a clear picture of what your child needs help with in counseling by hearing directly from you as the parent. If your child is 10 years or older, they can attend the intake session with one or both of their parents or legal guardians.

+ Do I have to attend counseling with my young child?

For children who are 6 years old or younger, at least one parent must be present at therapy sessions. This way, our child counselors can integrate both individual work with your child along with parenting work. If your child is over the age of 6 years old, you may be able to meet with your child’s counselor for separate parenting sessions from time-to-time or the therapist will ask you to join during the last few minutes of a session. This will depend on your child's age and their individual needs.

+ Do you offer online counseling for children?

We do offer online counseling sessions for children; however, for children who are under the age of 8 years old, we highly recommend in-person sessions. Children under 8 years old can benefit more from in-person counseling due to certain developmental considerations and attention span.

+ How do your child counselors create a safe space for children so they feel comfortable to discuss their concerns?

Our child counselors are trained to create a safe and nurturing environment where your child can be their true self. By encouraging your child to actively engage in counseling, your child can express themselves. We adopt a child-centered approach where we take your child’s communication style, preferences, and pace into consideration.

We understand that traditional talk therapy may be challenging for children so our child therapists use play and creative techniques in counseling, including play and art therapy. Regardless of what therapeutic modality is used, your child’s thoughts and feelings will be validated.

Online Therapy FAQs

+ WHAT IS TELEHEALTH THERAPY?

At Anchor Therapy, we not only provide in-person sessions, but we also provide online (telehealth) therapy. Online therapy includes phone sessions and/or video sessions. We find that teens, students, young adults, and new parents enjoy the flexibility of online therapy most. But anyone can utilize the flexibility of online therapy sessions.

There is a lot of research out there that shows online therapy sessions are just as beneficial as in-person sessions are. And they can be done in the comfort of your own home! We are also much more flexible in our online therapy hours as well. You are welcome to have a combination of in-person sessions and online therapy. You can have a therapy session during your lunch break, in between studying at the library, or while you are on a work trip. The flexibility is endless! Please note: We can only provide online therapy to New Jersey, New York, and Florida residents as those are the states in which our psychotherapists are licensed.

+ What are the benefits of online therapy?

  • Convenience
  • Accessibility
  • Flexibility
  • Enhanced privacy and confidentiality
  • Comfort
  • Reduced stigma

+ How do I know that my information online is secure?

At Anchor Therapy, we take security and confidentiality very seriously. We only use online services that are HIPAA approved and compliant. Our secure online platforms ensure that all communication between you and your online therapist is safeguarded.

+ Why choose Anchor Therapy over a large teletherapy company?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many large teletherapy companies have been created. When using these teletherapy companies or applications, you may find that you are paying a cheap price but that is due to a few reasons. Clinicians are reimbursed poorly and see a lot of clients which can easily lead to burnout. There is also a poor vetting process for letting therapists join these networks. Lastly, there are many concerns over data and potential privacy breaches with these large companies. At Anchor Therapy, our owner Courtney Glashow, LCSW personally hires each therapist to ensure that they meet our practice’s requirements, from education to completing the required supervised hours to ensure that they are fully licensed to help clients.

Investment FAQs

+ What is the value of investing in therapy?

  • The benefits and value you gain from therapy will not end at our last session together - you can carry them with you for the rest of your life. When you accomplish the goals you set out in therapy, you will be able to take on anything that comes your way in the future. When you pay for therapy sessions, you are investing in a better life.

  • Mental health counseling is an investment in your future self. Just as a financial investment secures your fiscal future, an investment into therapy promotes your emotional well-being. Whether you are dealing with a recent life transition or trying to manage mental health symptoms stemming from a disorder, like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), counseling gives you the power to address and manage your mental health problems while building resilience along your journey.

  • Every investment you make will require a certain level of research and understanding, and therapy is no exception. In counseling, you will engage in a high level of introspection and self-reflection. Your beliefs and goals will be explored which will enhance your sense of self-awareness and give you a clearer direction in life.

+ Why is consistency important in therapy?

You can think of therapy like going to the gym and working out. Your first therapy session will not leave you miraculously feeling completely different, just as your first gym session will not give you your dream body or strength in one hour. However, with consistency and hard work, you will notice a difference. Regular attendance allows you to build rapport with your licensed therapist and, in turn, the trusting alliance that you build leaves room for honest and open communication and effective collaboration so you can reach your mental health goals.

+ How long does it take to see benefits from therapy?

On average, clients can see the benefits of therapy after 14 counseling sessions. Therapy is a gradual process, and regular attendance allows you to maintain momentum in understanding your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. While resistance or setbacks may occur, consistent therapy sessions provide a framework to address mental health concerns and work through obstacles effectively.

+ Can the benefits of therapy last a lifetime?

The benefits of mental health counseling can last over the long term. Improved coping mechanisms, enhanced self-awareness, increased communication skills, resolving past trauma, lifestyle changes, relapse prevention, support during life transitions, and personal growth are among the ways therapy can positively impact your life. When you invest in therapy sessions, you are investing in a better future.

+ Do you accept health insurance?

• While we don't accept insurance directly, we can provide you with a Superbill (like a detailed receipt) in which you can get reimbursed for sessions from your insurance company. Please contact your insurance to find out more about your out-of-network benefits, coinsurance, deductibles, and how many sessions they will cover. We understand how confusing and frustrating insurance benefits can be so we can help talk you through it so that we can help you get the maximum benefits possible out of your insurance plan. Our clients find it very easy to submit the Superbill and get reimbursed (usually around 60-80% per session) when they have out-of-network benefits.

• You can also use your HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) to pay for sessions.

• The benefits and value you gain from therapy will not end at our last session together - you can carry them with you for the rest of your life. When you accomplish the goals you set out in therapy, you will be able to take on anything that comes your way in the future. When you pay for therapy sessions, you are investing in a better life.

• If you would like to discuss your coverage options, please contact us by filling out the form below and our Intake Coordinator will respond to your inquiry.

+ How do I pay for therapy sessions?

Payment is due at the time of service. Payment methods accepted: Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Health Savings Account (HSA), and Flexible Savings Account (FSA).

+ What if I cannot make it to a session?

You have the flexibility to cancel or reschedule a session up to 24 hours before the appointment time. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice will incur a fee.

+ How do you handle billing transparency?

Our office abides by the No Surprises Act and provides a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) to all clients to ensure transparency in billing.
