About Zoe Mittman, lcsw
Hi! My name is Zoe Mittman and I am a psychotherapist at the group private practice, Anchor Therapy. I provide in-person therapy in downtown Hoboken, New Jersey and teletherapy from the comfort of your own home to residents of New Jersey and Florida. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and have significant experience working with children (5+ years old), teens and adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD and ADHD. I received my Masters of Social Work from the University of Michigan, and previously worked in Chicago as a psychotherapist for several years. My approach incorporates CBT, mindfulness, strength-based and person-centered techniques. I believe you are the expert in your life, and each session will be tailored to meet your individual needs.
You are an adult navigating life’s challenges. From the excitement of new opportunities to the grief of past relationships and experiences, you are overwhelmed with feelings. You are searching for a healthy balance between your responsibilities and self-care, but you’re uncertain where to begin. The desire to make change, yet the struggle to do so is discouraging. I understand how you’re feeling. I’m here to offer you a safe space, where you will gain insight, learn healthy coping skills, and ultimately work towards your goals.
Therapy is one of the few moments in your busy life that focuses entirely on you. I’m so proud of you for taking the first step in this journey, and I will be here to support you along the way!
A few fun facts about me: I’m originally from New York, and after spending nearly a decade in the Midwest, I decided it was time to return to the East Coast. I love spending quality time with my dog Mordy, going to exercise classes, traveling, and hanging out with family and friends. Self-care is a must for me! I thoroughly enjoy it, and it allows me to show up fully engaged and authentic as a therapist.
More about how I could help…
+ ADHD
- I have years of experience working with children, teens, and adults diagnosed with ADHD. I have helped parents and individuals understand what an ADHD diagnosis means and how to create a treatment plan around it. Most importantly, I provide psycho-education and CBT-related coping skills to children, teens, and adults on how to live a life with an ADHD diagnosis. I work collaboratively with the child or individual's doctor, school, or other providers to help them achieve their goals.
+ Anxiety
- My goal is to help individuals reduce the adverse effects of anxiety in their daily lives. I have experience working with children and teens dealing with anxiety related to friendships, family and school, as well as with adults facing social anxiety, dating concerns, work-related stress, and uncertainty about the future. I provide psychoeducation on anxiety, and utilize mindfulness, CBT and REBT techniques. I also explore with clients the relationship between their values and anxiety.
+ Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- I've used CBT to treat a variety of issues amongst several age groups, and have found it to be particularly successful for people struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD, disordered eating and body-image concerns. CBT is a treatment orientation where I can stay true to my authentic self, and adapt to the age of the client. CBT is not a one-size fits all approach. I lean into different components of CBT, depending on what my client is most receptive to and their presenting problem.
+ Depression
- I have worked with many clients of all ages to address depression. Depression can create significant difficulties in peoples’ lives. Utilizing individual therapy sessions to process through depression and other life difficulties, you will find your depressive symptoms decrease in intensity and frequency. Once there is a decrease in symptoms, clients can continue to work on developing tools to cope with future negative or uncomfortable feelings.
+ Exposure and Responsive Prevention
- I primarily use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to treat OCD, although it has been effective with clients presenting with social or health anxiety. When introducing ERP, I typically start with psychoeducation, and my language is tailored to the age of my client. I share that ERP consists of two components: exposure and response prevention. We will discuss types of exposures and examples, clarify the meaning of 'response prevention' and explore the effectiveness of ERP.
+ LGBTQIA+ POPULATION
- I see many LGBTQIA+ clients who are in need of support. Some issues I help with includes helping clients with their coming out process, parenting a child who came out, gender or sexual identity questioning, experiencing discrimination/bullying, relationship issues, transitioning, and any other stressors that may arise. While your identity may not even be a stressor, some people are looking for a therapist who they can feel comfortable seeing which is why I think it’s important to express my comfort and knowledge in working with this population. I prefer She/Hers pronouns, and prefer to be called Zoe.
+ Life Transitions
- My primary focus is on supporting college-aged students and adults through life transitions, though I have experience helping kids and teens as well. As an adult myself, I find that my ability to relate is particularly beneficial. I help clients identify and reframe self-limiting beliefs regarding change, while empowering clients to feel more confident and use coping skills. I view life transitions through a lens of grief, recognizing and normalizing the complex emotions regarding change.
+ Mindfulness-Based Therapy
- I use mindfulness-based therapy with the majority of my clients. I lead clients through mindfulness techniques during sessions, and we talk about how they can be used outside of therapy. Mindfulness practices have been particularly effective for adults who are swamped with the demands of daily life. We talk about how to be mindful of their thoughts, feelings, actions and communication patterns. We discuss the power of awareness, and how we can use it to reach their goals.
+ OCD
- I have experience working with children and adults with different subtypes of OCD. Over the past several years, treating OCD has become a passion of mine. I’ve attended several trainings hosted by the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) and NOCD. My approach to treating OCD includes a lens of self-compassion, paired with mostly CBT and ERP techniques, and sprinkled with acceptance. When appropriate, I include family members (i.e. parents or a partner) in treatment to discuss how to reduce accommodation of symptoms.
+ TELEHEALTH
- Are you looking for the option of virtual therapy? I offer the option of telehealth sessions (video and phone counseling). If you are residing in New Jersey then you are eligible for telehealth services with me. Telehealth sessions are great if you have a sick child at home, you’re sick yourself, there’s a snow storm, you’re stuck at work, you’re traveling, or you just prefer to do a session while in your pajamas in the comfort of your own home. I treat telehealth sessions as the same as in-person and find them just as beneficial in our work together. The ability to do telehealth sessions also comes with more flexibility in scheduling.
What the next steps would look like…
The next step, if you feel I could be a good fit to help you or your loved one, would be to reach out to our intake coordinator Victoria by filling out the form at the bottom of this page. Victoria will give you all the information you need to know when setting up an appointment and to make sure you’re a good fit with the therapist you’re requesting. When reaching out, please explain a little bit about yourself (or who you want to bring in for therapy) and what you’re looking for help with. We would then discuss your availability to find a time to schedule your intake session.
You have the option of coming in-person for sessions or doing online therapy (video/phone sessions). I have availability Monday through Thursday, including evenings. While every person and family are different, I conduct an intake assessment in which we will discuss your struggles, your goals for therapy, and your history. If you are bringing in a child or teen who is under 18 years old then I will need a parent or guardian present and get some background information from you as well. This helps me get a full picture of who you are and how I can best help your child or your family. You also may find it helpful to attend the intake session without your child so that you can speak openly about your concerns.
Honestly the hardest part of starting therapy is finding a therapist who’s available and a good fit. That’s why I try to explain here how I work with my clients. If this seems like a good fit then feel free to reach out! Our intake coordinator, Victoria, will get back to every client who reaches out through the form on our website. If Victoria finds that we are not a good fit for whatever reason, then she will see if there’s another therapist at Anchor Therapy who can help you or she will direct you to another professional in the area who can best help you.
Please feel free to contact our intake coordinator Victoria and we can start the process of helping you or your loved one feel better soon.
